Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick Statement on the Bipartisan Passage of Senate Bill 6, Banning THC

AUSTIN – Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick issued the following statement today after the Texas Senate, for the third time since May, passed Senate Bill 6, by Sen. Charles Perry, R-Lubbock, Banning THC, with bipartisan support:

“Today marked the third time since May that the Texas Senate has taken bold action to protect our communities by passing legislation to ban intoxicating THC. Since 2019, bad actors have taken advantage of a loophole in Texas agriculture law to sell potent, intoxicating forms of THC that have nothing to do with agriculture. These shops have rapidly spread throughout Texas, endangering the health and safety of children and families across our state, with no accountability.

“In the latest poll, 72% of voters who voted Republican in the last three primaries support banning all THC. Law enforcement across Texas is unanimous in their backing of this legislation, testifying to the urgent need to close dangerous loopholes and keep our families safe by banning THC in Texas.

“Senate Bill 6 has been a top legislative priority because the Texas Senate refuses to allow bad actors to use loopholes in agriculture law to flood our communities with potent, intoxicating products disguised as harmless treats. These products lure and endanger our children and threaten public safety. That’s why every single law enforcement agency in Texas, along with the Texas Medical Association, the Texas Pediatric Society, and countless families, stand behind SB 6.

“Texans expect action—and the Senate will continue delivering until SB 6 becomes law.”

Senate Bill 6, by Sen. Charles Perry, prohibits the retail sale of any intoxicating cannabinoid in Texas, including in beverages.

SB 6 does not alter the Texas Compassionate Use Program (TCUP) or laws related to the farming of hemp. SB 6 does not impact the sale or use of CBD or CBG products.
