Lt. Governor Patrick on Beaumont Banning Bible Study

AUSTIN – It is completely unacceptable for the city of Beaumont to ban its police officers from holding voluntary Bible studies during their lunch hour. This is an infringement on their First Amendment Right to free exercise of religion guaranteed by the United States Constitution.

The City of Beaumont should immediately reverse its decision to restrict police officers’ or city employees’ free exercise of religion.

Religious liberty is the underpinning of our nation and constitution. Actions like this are why I have asked the Senate State Affairs Committee to study and make recommendations on how the State of Texas should work to affirm the religious liberty protections of all Texans.
