News from Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick

Friends,

I hope you had some time to rest and reflect on the many blessings we have over the Thanksgiving holiday as I did. This past week I was back visiting citizens across the state. I haven’t stopped traveling across Texas since the session ended in May.

I spoke to business leaders in El Paso, Austin, Dallas and Waco. I spoke to a Republican Ladies Club in Houston and Texas Right to Life in Dallas.

Meanwhile, I instructed the Senate’s Veteran Affairs and Military Installations Subcommittee on Border Security to hold a hearing on sanctuary cities.

Veteran Affairs and Military Installations Hearing
The Senate continues to lead on the issue of getting rid of sanctuary city practices in Texas. Simply put, sanctuary city policies endanger the lives of Texans. Every level of government, including city, county, state and federal need to enforce the law, including federal immigration law. That’s why the Senate led the way during the last session to provide funding for border security at the highest levels in history. I commend Border Security Subcommittee Chair Brian Birdwell for leading the effort on addressing this serious issue that affects us all.

Texas Right to Life
I had the opportunity to speak at an event hosted by Texas Right to Life where I shared the Senate’s pro-life efforts and accomplishments. After a successful legislative session of protecting victims of sex trafficking, reforming end-of-life laws to protect vulnerable patients and protecting the unborn with disabilities, I remain committed to protect the unborn and the sanctity of life. With increased funding of $50 million in the General Revenue fund for women’s health, the Senate has made the health of women and the unborn a priority.

Waco Chamber of Commerce
The Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce was kind enough to ask me to give a State of the State address at the Baylor Club in the McLane Stadium. I spoke about many issues that affect not only Texans but the entire country. I touched on the Senate’s accomplishments such as lowering property taxes, cutting the franchise tax, reforming and improving education, improving our infrastructure and securing our border.

There is no time to rest. I’ve charged the Senate committees with studying and making
recommendations on these same issues and more during the interim period prior to the 2017 session.

You can see the full list of interim charges here.

Lastly, please join me in continuing to pray for the families of the victims from the terrorist attack in California. The pain of this tragedy for these families will not end when the news cycle and cameras move onto the next story.
